Can you go to RMV without an appointment in MA? ›

An appointment is required to visit to conduct License or ID related transactions. Note that Registration-related transactions can be performed at an RMV Service Center without an appointment.

Bring all required documents, fees, and the completed application to any RMV Service Center. If you are a AAA member, you can make a reservation to renew your driver's license/ID at a AAA location. Visit aaa.com/appointments to schedule your visit.

To complete the REAL ID application process, you will need to make an appointment at a participating AAA branch and bring your original documents. Use a PO Box? Proof of a physical address is required.

You can renew your Rhode Island driver's license up to 90 days before its expiration date. You can renew online with a credit card, at any DMV branch location or AAA branch office (members only).

Renewing Your License in Person

Some centers have a strict no-walk-in policy, so make sure you check hours and make an appointment, if necessary. Take any required tests, if applicable. You will be required to at least take a vision exam. Review and change your name, address, and other information if necessary.

Massachusetts law requires drivers who are 75 years of age or older to renew in person.

You'll need to prove your: U.S. citizenship or lawful presence via a current passport or birth certificate or a current visa or green card. Social Security number via a Social Security card.

AAA REAL ID service is available to members in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Those who are renewing their current standard license or ID card can apply for a REAL ID in person (with required documentation) at a local AAA branch.
